What this is
PsychReviews is a searchable index of book reviews published in psychology journals and in adjacent fields: cognitive science, psychiatry, and the philosophy of mind and phenomenology. Entries list book titles and contributors where they can be identified, along with the reviewer, journal, and year, and link to the review at the publisher's site. The index contains metadata only; the reviews themselves stay where they were published.
The site is inspired by PhilReviews, which does the same for philosophy.
Where the data comes from
Entries are harvested from the Crossref public API for a curated list of journals that publish (or historically published) book reviews. Reviews are identified from their metadata, which works better for some journals than others: journals dedicated to reviews (like Contemporary Psychology / PsycCRITIQUES) are indexed nearly completely, while journals whose older reviews were deposited without any "review" marker in the title are under-represented for now. Coverage statistics per journal are in the data files, and the index grows as the harvester improves.
Relevant entries from Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews are collected from its public archive and review pages. General philosophy publications contribute only books with an identifiable connection to the subjects covered by this index. These pages identify the book title, contributors, and reviewer separately. The Year filter refers to the review's publication year.
Book titles and contributor names for many Contemporary Psychology / PsycCRITIQUES entries are checked against the University of Akron's public PsycCRITIQUES archive, maintained in partnership with the American Psychological Association. This helps distinguish a reviewed book's title from the title of the review essay. Some older entries still have incomplete citations or show the review title where the book has not yet been identified.
Topic coverage
The topic filter uses provisional assignments based on explicit words and phrases in the displayed titles. A book can appear under several topics. These assignments have not been individually verified, and some entries still display the review essay's title. A topic's results therefore may include mistakes and will not include every relevant book.
Books without a topic remain searchable under "All topics." The journal in which a review appears does not determine the book's topics. Individual assignments can be corrected as books are checked.
